Hall claims third in women’s race, retains overall lead
Mannion’s time moved him up to second overall on GC, less than a minute behind the race leader, Rob Britton (Rally).
“I can’t really say I was surprised,” Mannion said. “I’ve always really liked this time trial a lot. The wind made it slower for everyone, for me it doesn’t really change thing. It’s just as hard you just go a little slower.”
Looking forward to the final day, Mannion said anything could happen on the Gila Monster climb.
“We have two guys near the top five, a couple guys in the top ten at least so anything can happen in the last 20k on Sunday,” Mannion said. “It will be hard to take it from Rob, he’s looking pretty good on the climbs right now, but we’ll definitely try on Sunday.”
In the women’s time trial, Katie Hall put forth a monstrous effort on a blustery day to keep herself in the leader’s jersey. Hall finished the race in third place, 18 seconds behind eventual winner Chloe Dygart (Twenty20). Her nearest rival, Sara Poidevin (Rally) claimed the second spot and a few precious seconds out of Hall’s lead.
“I feel excited to race, we have a really good group of girls here, probably will definitely bring a fight but we’re well prepared,” Hall said. “I’ve been working hard on my time trial. I feel sometimes I can have a good time trial and sometimes I can’t, and so I’m happy to have had a good time trial today. It’s big for me. I think it might be close to 7 seconds that separates the GC, but it’s not a lot.”
Tomorrow’s stage is an afternoon criterium in downtown Silver City.
