Putt and Jaramillo a force in daylong breakaway on stage 2
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Daniel Jaramillo earned the polka dot jersey at the end of Amgen Tour of California’s second stage from Modesto to San Jose. The result came after teammate Tanner Putt bridged up to Jaramillo to ensure the Colombian climber was in the best possible position to secure the jersey.
Jaramillo joined the early break with the sole intention of collecting enough KOM points to move to the top the mountains classification. His breakaway companion Rafal Majka (BORA – Hansgrohe) eventually won the stage and the yellow jersey after 144.5 km of racing.
“The whole team earned the jersey today, because it was my teammates who put me in the break,” Jaramillo said. “I was very happy to accomplish the goal of the day, which was to try and take the KOM jersey. Being up there and racing aggressively is a nice way to give back to the team and the sponsors who support us. I will fight to keep this jersey to the end.”
Jaramillo’s teammate Janier Acevedo sits in 17th place, one minute and two seconds back on GC. The Colombian said he felt good for the rest of the week.
“It was a stage that was really hard, but good for me,” Acevedo said. “Good to be in with the top 20 riders, but I think I can do better toward the end of the week.”
Tomorrow’s stage starts in Pismo Beach and finishes in Morro Bay after 192.4 kilometers of racing. The riders will encounter one KOM, two sprints and a small, but steep climb to the finish.
