Mt. Baldy queen stage

MT. BALDY, Calif. – UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team was satisfied with another rewarding day in the saddle at the Amgen Tour of California, this time from Ontario to Mt Baldy, where the team kept a watchful eye over Daniel Jaramillo’s polka dot jersey.

“I’m happy to see the whole team work,” team director Sebastian Alexandre said. “We started the stage with the goal to protect and increase the gap to the king of the mountain jersey. We accomplished that today.”

Out of a 15-rider breakaway, Jaramillo picked up max points at the summit of the first categorized climb up Glendora Ridge Road and nabbed third on the second KOM, both Cat. 1 ascents. At the end of the stage, he’s sitting 13 points ahead of race leader Rafal Majka (BORA – Hasgrohe), who is currently in second in the KOM standings.

“It was very nice to see the commitment from everyone in the team to that goal,” Alexandre said. “Daniel responded to that very well today. He was up there with Greg Henderson and took the points and was also smart. There are two or three guys who are up there in points as well, so we will be fighting to the end.”

Tomorrow is the Big Bear individual time trial where riders will tackle a technical 15-mile (24 kilometer) course. Despite the flat profile, altitude will present a challenge as the route around part of the lake sits at almost 7,000 feet.
