Jaramillo wins Tour de Hongrie overall title

Colombian climber claims yellow jersey on penultimate stage

Jaramillo, who finished just off the podium in fourth at the Tour of Langkawi earlier this year, said he has been training hard and it’s nice to see the hard work is paying off.

“I am very happy for this victory,” Jaramillo said. “The all team rode great and strong, it was very important to have riders experienced like (Sebastian) Haedo, (Jonny) Clarke and (Janier) Acevedo this week. They never panic and help the rest of us to be calmer in difficult situations. Carlos (Alzate) was super fast and Lachlan (Norris) was a big part of the victory yesterday, so I could not have won without the effort of everyone.”

UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Director Seba Alexandre said it was a great week with hard racing, especially on the windy stages – and there were plenty of them over the five-day race.

An incredibly short prologue kicked off the action at the Tour of Hongrie, the 1 km course saw Jaramillo and Alzate come in at the same time at 1 minute and 3 seconds, good enough for sixth and seventh place. Scott Sunderland (Iso Whey) took the win.

Racing commenced after the first stage was cancelled because of bad weather conditions with 135km of a flat, windy stage. After a chaotic finale that had a few crashes including Jaramillo and Haedo, Alzate finished fourth in the sprint. Jaramillo got back on his bike to finish sixth.

Stage four was mostly flat until 30km to go when a 10km climb was hard enough to make a separation in the peloton.

“Our riders were always near the front so we were always in good position there, Alexandre said. “The plan went to the perfection as we were trying to have someone in the break to avoid working. Haedo and Clarke were the main riders for that job, while everyone needed to be near the front.”

With 10kms to go, the break was caught. During the counter attacks, Jaramillo played conservative while Norris with Acevedo did the hard work covering the moves.

“With three kms to go a rider took off and Acevedo started the chase until 1km until he caught that rider, then was up to Norris to set Daniel in perfect position and started the lead out for Jaramillo’s victory.

Jaramillo started the final stage in the yellow jersey. The team planned to control the race in defense of the lead and was successful

“It came down to a field sprint again and Carlos was able to finish third and Jaramillo inside the top 10, so that sealed the victory for the team,” Alexandre said.

The team has Tour of Sibiu starting July 5-9. It’s the first time the Romanian race has hosted teams from North America.
