Mannion still second overall ahead of queen stage
His win also moves him up to first in the Utah Sports Commission Sprinter competition. Gavin Mannion remains in second overall, 26 seconds out of the yellow jersey currently worn by Rob Britton (Rally).
“This is a stage I’ve been dreaming about all year,” McCabe said in a post race interview. ‘To get the stage and the sprinter’s jersey is phenomenal. I was a little impatient yesterday, so today I waited until 250m to go.”
It was another fast and furious day of racing for the peloton, who averaged 50 km an hour for the first hour of the 185km stage.
A break of 12 eventually escaped that included Chris Jones. The move took the pressure of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team, who no longer had to participate in the chase.
Once the riders approached the final climbs in Bountiful, the breakaway group came back and fireworks began. The lead changed hands several times as the GC group attacked each other on the climb.
“The guys did a phenomenal job of taking care of me and staying in position,” McCabe said.
McCabe lost contact with the leaders on the last climb, but Jonny Clarke was there to help him stay calm and pace back up to the group.
“Clarke looked for McCabe to put in him perfect for the sprint, and he was able to finish the great work the team did for him,” team director Seba Alexandre said.
Around the final corner, McCabe was fifth wheel behind Brent Bookwalter (BMC).
“I knew it was going to be a fast sprint because of a tailwind,” McCabe said. “When I opened it up with about 250 meters to go, no one could come around me. I’m pretty proud of this win.”
Tomorrow marks the queen stage of the 2017 Tour of Utah. The 98km stage will take the riders from Heber Valley to Snowbird.
