Hall animates race with multiple attacks
“Leah Thomas and Katie Hall both got away in small groups over the climb but with other riders not committing to the break, it was always brought back,” team director Rachel Hedderman said. “Leah launched a solo attack inside the last few kilometers, only being caught inside the last kilometer.”
Despite a thwarted effort to stay away until the finish, Thomas took the queen of the mountains jersey and Hall currently sits second in that competition. Lauren Hall is the best placed rider on GC, sitting fifth on GC at 8 seconds.
“Once everything was back together towards the end of the final lap, I knew one last attack could benefit the team,” Thomas said. “We would no longer be responsible for any chasing and the sprinters could just focus on the sprint. I went from a little more than 3km to go and held a gap till 500 meters. Unfortunately, the finish didn’t end with the result we wanted, but our legs feel open and ready to really dig going into tomorrow’s time trial. It’s a long enough, hilly enough time trial, that it could decide the GC. The course suits many of us and we look forward to racing with conviction in the coming days.”
