UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling leads team GC
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Katie Hall successfully maintained her overall lead in the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease women’s race today, coming across the line in 17th place, same time as the stage 3 winner, Coryn Rivera (Sunweb). Hall starts tomorrow one second ahead of Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans).
“The team rode an amazing race today,” team director Rachel Heal said. “They really stepped up to the challenge of defending yellow against one of the world’s strongest teams. At one second, the lead is down to the smallest of margins, but we are ready to come out fighting tomorrow.”
The team started the day on a new course that took the peloton from Elk Grove to Sacramento, a total of 118 km. Despite being pancake flat, the route was far from easy. Headwinds plagued the majority of the stage, causing the field to fracture at several points.
“At one point I caught behind in one of the second groups,” Hall said. “But my team is so strong and takes such good care of me they just paced me up to the front group. Normally I don’t really like flat stages like this, but it was so windy it made it challenging and fun. Thank you to the race organizers for creating such a great route. ”
Several attacks went off the front during the stage, but it all came together for the sprinters to make their mark on the race. All of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team made it home safely to prepare for the final day of defending the yellow jersey.
The final day will take place on the same California Capitol Mall circuit that has hosted the past two Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease women’s race finishes. It’s also the same circuit the men’s opening stage will finish on just hours after the women.
