Devil’s Den State Park – Stage 1 of the Joe Martin Stage Race is a sharp uphill time trial where the climb out of Devil’s Den State Park opens immediately after leaving the start-house. An unexpectedly cool and wet day, Stage 1 was a day for the all-rounder riders, who weren’t deterred by the hard climb nor the short 4.83km distance.
Ruth Winder claimed top-honors in the women’s race only a few tenths of a second lead over Lauren Stephens of Team Tibco-SVB.
I’m really happy, surprised and pleased. The course was hard. I liked the rolling hills, they suited me and my power. Tomorrow’s stage will be hard and I’m looking forward to it.

When asked about the result and moving forward Rachel Heal noted, “We have three riders in the top 6 so it gives us some options. Tibco is sitting just .4 of a second behind us, so it’s going to be a good battle and it’s one we’re looking forward to.”
Mannion Podiums in 3rd
After having a bit of time away from racing, Mannion wasn’t totally sure of his performance level but his performance certainly showed his training is going well.
Today was a short uphill TT to start off JMSR. I felt good in training the past few days, but it’s been a while since I’ve raced so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Pacing was very important today and I think I did that well so I’m happy with third place.

When asked about the next couple of days Mannion added, “time gaps are close so I think it will be a battle the next three stages.”
Director Seba Alexandre added, “it’s a very tactical race and it’s good we have so many riders close to the leader. We have a solid team and I believe we have good chances to get the win.”
Stages 2 and 3 are both road races, and the Joe Martin Stage Race wraps up on Sunday with a criterium circuit race in downtown Fayetteville.
